Adopt-A-Street Program Information -- Posted by Roseann on Wednesday, June 25 2008

Broward County's Adopt-A-Street Program empowers volunteer groups to keep their neighborhoods litter-free one street at a time. The program began in unincorporated Broward County in 1995 and in 2000 a county-wide program was opened to all cities as a result of a partnership between Waste and Recycling Services and Broward Beautiful. More than 12,000 volunteers, from 16 cities have removed 152,263 pounds of litter from their adopted streets!

What are the advantages of adopting a street?
. Encourages neighborhood pride and increased
property values.
. Reduces litter removal costs.
. People litter less in clean neighborhoods.
. Allows maintenance crews to perform other tasks.

Which street can we adopt?

You can adopt any street within Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. Please contact me via this web site, or call my office.

What are the group leader's responsibilities?

. Scheduling cleanup dates with volunteers and notifying
me of the cleanup date.
. Distributing safety equipment and trash bags.
. Monitoring volunteers during cleanup events.
. Returning Event Completion Forms by mail, fax or e-mail
after each event.

What are Broward County's responsibilities?

. Providing safety equipment and trash bags.
. Conducting safety meetings with the groups.
. Installing "Adopt-A-Street" signs recognizing the
groups.
. Disposing of bagged litter after the events.

How can I Adopt-A-Street?

Please call my office at 954-351-7282, my cell phone at 954-801-6747, or respond via e-mail through this web site. I'd be more than happy to talk to everyone about this thoroughly worthwhile project.

For more information call the Broward County Litter hotline at 954-474-1835, e-mail them at litterprevention@broward.org or visit their web site at www.broward.org.

Thank you,
Mayor Roseann Minnet

Mayor's Comments-06/24 Commission Meeting -- Posted by Roseann on Wednesday, June 25 2008

I want to thank all who came to the Ocean Watch Foundation beach cleanup. It was a major success and there will be another in September.

I also want to thank Minto for an outstanding job this afternoon. The official opening of the park was a success and I was in the company of the Vice Mayor, Commissioners Silverstone and Dodd and many of our residents. Thank you Minto for a positive project for Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.

I also want to thank all who are participating in the Adopt-A-Street program. I am proud to take the lead in this program as I was informed on June 18th that the person put in charge had resigned. Once I heard this, I immediately started looking for an alternate. In the meantime, I have identified over 10 streets for adoption. Please call me or visit my web site at www.roseannminnet.com if you are interested in the program. My goal is to have every street adopted in our town. With your help we can accomplish this and make this a beautiful town for all.

Our town must prepare for the future sustainability of our community. What do I mean by sustainability? "Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." How can we accomplish this, by putting together a strong infastructure to carry our town forward. What does this mean: improving our current drainage situation, updating our sewer system in the south part of town, underground utilities for all of El Mar, implementing green building codes and utilizing more efficient energy sources and recycling, just to name a few. Now is the time to set our path to a sustainable future. We have a responsibility to sustain and enhance our environment for the future.

Thank you to everyone on the 4th of July celebration committee - you're doing a great job! I look forward to seeing everyone on the 4th!

Thank you.

Green Living -- Posted by Roseann on Wednesday, June 4 2008

Did you know................

The United States comprises just 4% of the world's population, but uses 25% of its resources and 30% of its oil supply.

You can save more than $2500 per year by bringing your lunch to work rather than going out for lunch. Use reusable containers rather than paper or plastic and save even more money!

You can extend the life of your lettuce and other salad greens in your refrigerator by placing a stainless steel fork or spoon in with the greens.

People who live in the city are usually more friendly to the environment as they walk and bike more and use public transportation more. Also, the smaller homes and apartments are less expensive to run than a suburban home.

The average American creates 4.5 pounds of trash every day and will pop open 43,371 cans of soda in a lifetime.

You can "sell" your old kitchen. Green demolition organizations will help your renovation team by properly dismantling higher-end kitchen cabinets and appliances that can later be resold.

If you send any pair of old sneakers to Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe program, the company will turn them into bouncy playground flooring.

Good information for us all!!!

Mayor's Comments - 05/27/08 Commission Meeting -- Posted by Roseann on Monday, June 2 2008

Welcome all and hope you enjoyed the Memorial Day weekend. I thank everyone at Aruba's for their hard work and dedication to the town. Great to see all the commissioners.

I also want to remind everyone about the June 3 Hurricane Preparedness workshops the town is sponsoring. There will be lots of information available so we invite all to attend.

Adopt a Street program is getting on its way. Shirley Russotti will be the coordinator. So please get with Shirley and start adopting. You can also call Town Hall if you have any questions.

Over the past few months, I have been working to extend courtesy to all. Unfortunately, what I am learning is that even when you extend yourself, you may not always get the courtesy returned. I have tried to work with everyone and maybe my intentions have been misconstrued, and if they are I only ask that they talk to me about what issues I have not communicated. I have been open and upfront with everyone, if it is the facts that bother people then so be it. I will continue to present the facts, ask the hard questions and stand up to my beliefs.

Mayor's Comments-Commission Meeting 05/13/08 -- Posted by Roseann on Thursday, May 15 2008

Welcome back everyone. Hope all had a nice sojourn from the Town Commission meetings.

I also want to give a warm reception to our new Town Attorney Dan Abbott. I hope you will always feel that LBTS is your home away from home. Welcome Town Attorney Dan Abbott.

I also want to thank the following people and organizations for their support of me over the past months:

The Lauderdale by the sea Garden Club for inviting me to their annual meeting.

Marc Furth for the complimentary photo with the SFD.

The BSO LBTS Police Department for a very informative ride on Friday evening. It has opened my eyes to the real world of our town and county.

Thanks Crane Crest and Ocean Colony for inviting me to speak.

Thank you Terra Mar Homeowners Association for inviting me to your annual picnic.

I also want to say goodby to our past Town Chaplain Father Handrahan. His order has asked him to retire and he will be leaving Assumption and going back to his order in Boston.

I enjoyed Broward Days. Even though it was late in the session and the program was rather lax, it was a good time to get to know my fellow Commissioners, Vice Mayor McIntee, Commissioner Clottey and other elected Broward County officials.

Also in the agenda this evening is the resolution for the unified zip code. This is a town-wide issue and what a wonderful opportunity if we could get the Post Master General to designate LBTS with its own zip code. We share zip codes with Ft. Lauderdale and Pompano. Please put up a sign in sheet in your condos, talk to your neighbors, send letters to the Town Manager. The more input we receive, the more power we have to convince the postal service to give us our own zip code.

Lets all work together for this common goal.

Mayor's Comments-Commission Meeting April 8, 2008 -- Posted by Roseann on Wednesday, April 9 2008

Good evening.

It has been two months since the election and one of my campaign committments was to run the meetings in a civil, more respectful manner.

I have been getting positive feedback from residents that the meetings are moving smoother.

I want to thank my fellow Commissioners and Town Manager. We are all working together to stay on message during the meetings, and respecting all who speak.

Even though we have disagreed on certain topics, we have made our points, stated our positions and moved on with the agenda.

As a unit, we agreed to listen to all and with that in mind, we must hear from the public during all readings of ordinances, first and second, and resolutions.

The will of the people is the common thread on this dias.

I would like to remind everyone that April 22nd is Earth Day. Please do your part. Think about organizing a half hour cleanup blitz in front of your condos or in your neighborhood. Residents working together make a difference for the town.

This past Sunday I joined The Sea Shepherders of Pine Crest High School for their first LBTS beach cleanup. We started just south of the pier and made our way south. The beach was alot cleaner when we left. Be an example, pick up litter.

I am looking forward to Broward Days in Tallahassee with my fellow Commissioner Vice Mayor McIntee and Commissioner Clottey. This will be a great opportunty to meet and work with our state elected officials.

Do not forget to attend the Scenic Highway meeting on April 17, here in Jarvis Hall. It is imperative we show support for this project. Staff has worked very hard and long. This project could open up the doors for additional grant funds if passed in Broward County.

And in closing, being the new kid on the block, I have a lot to learn.

I want to thank my neighbors for their words of encouragement and support.

I will continue to do my part and stay on message working towards bringing unity to our town, asking the hard questions when need be and preserving the small town quaint seaside village quality life we all treasure.

Villas by the Sea Project -- Posted by Roseann on Thursday, April 3 2008

I met with John Carter, Vice President of Planning and Development for Minto Homes on Monday, March 31st.

He gave me a progress report on the Villas by the Sea project.

The parking lot and park should officially be open within 60-90 days.

Stay posted for further updates.

Mayor's Comments Commission Meeting March 25th, 2008 -- Posted by Roseann on Sunday, March 30 2008

The past weekend was a great time for everyone in Lauderdale by the Sea. Easter by the Sea was a great success. A fun time was had by all, children and adults alike. There were games for all. Everyone helped out and all the Commissioners were in attendance. The staff was on hand to celebrate as well.

Easter morning services sponsored by the town and the Community Church was one of the most well attended. Over 500 chairs were set up and there was standing room only. The music was inspiring and the sermon by Reverend Goldsmith was very endearing for the celebration. His message was peace, love and healing. The VFD was on hand for both celebrations and were an integral part to its success. The VFD has always been an important part of our LBTS community.

I also attended the services for Commander Ed Patton. The Commander served LBTS for 7 years. The family was very appreciative that the Commission placed the flag at half mast.

During the past weeks I attended two workshops; one on coastal management of our beaches and another on the A1A scenic highway project. Assistant Town Manager John Olinzack was in attendance at both events. I learned much about these two projects that staff in LBTS has been involved with for some time. The next scenic highway project meeting will be held in LBTS and stay tuned for further updates. If the county can be successful in getting this designation it will increase chances for more grant funding. Business and community must get involved to make sure this project continues.

Also I enjoyed meeting the businesses along Commercial Boulevard. I wanted to hear first hand some of the comments about our parking meter situation. For a small town, the parking situation changes from block to block. The concensus is better enforecement and signage.

My fellow Commissioners Dodd and Clottey and I met with representatives of Congressman Ron Klein. An information session on what our Washington partners can do for us. The most important item right now is to identify seniors and veterans who may be eligible for the President's stimulus package. The application must in by by April 15th. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to visit my web site and I will make sure you get all the information you need.

Tonight we will vote on one of the most important decisions we as a Commission will decide. It is our fiduciary responsibility to determine the facts, listen to all sides objectively and decide what is best for the residents of Lauderdale by the Sea. Thank you
