Mayor's Comments-Commission Mtg. 06/23/09 -- Posted by Roseann on Saturday, June 27 2009

Good evening. I want to thank the past Commisioners for the Reef Project. This project is moving forward and it was spearheaded by our past Commission. I say thank you to them and staff for keeping this project in the forefront. Hats off to the past Commission who went far and above to make this project happen.

The Pelican Hopper's route has been increased. This is due to a joint effort between staff and Broward County Transit. So, please hop on the Pelican Hopper and thank you staff.

In the latest issue of the Times, it stated that the Mayor found 40 interruptions from the audience--I would like to correct that statement-the interruptions were from the dais, not from the audience.

I'd like to read something from Ralph Waldo Emerson on Success:

What is Success?
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by
a healthy child, a garden patch
or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed
easier because you have lived;
This is to have succeeded.

I wish everyone a happy and safe 4th of July and I'm looking forward to the parade and all of the activities.

Thank you.;

Mayor's Comments-Commission Mtg. 05/27/09 -- Posted by Roseann on Sunday, May 31 2009

Good evening. I would like to address comments made about me in the Times May 8th edition. "Since Mayor Minnet has lost control of the meetings, we must control our meetings and stop the interruptions and yelling from the audience and bring decorum back to the hall". May I remind all that we had two meetings to discuss this and it was the consensus of this dais to listen to all and hear from everyone. I have reviewed months of meetings and the interruptions from the audience are nothing compared to the interruptions from a particular Commissioner who over and over again interjects his personal opinion, only to benefit his self interest, not public interest. Pass the gavel --- don't make me laugh.

I'd like to remind everyone of two events coming up in our Town; Congressman Ron Klein will hold a satellite office meeting here in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Jarvis Hall from 2-3 pm on May 29th. I am also aware of his presence with the VFD and the Chamber and other community groups in our Town. This is a great opportunity for you to meet Congressman Klein and ask your questions.

Also there is a meeting on June 8th at Jarvis Hall to discuss the route for the Pelican Hopper. This meeting is crucial, please try to attend.

For those who attended the spring concert, it was a fabulous event and I want to thank all for pulling this together on such short notice. I hope we will have more concerts like this in the months ahead.

I also attended a meeting on the Census of 2010. The census will define who we are as a community, as well as a Nation. It will affect political representation and direct the allocation of billions of dollars in govenment funding. Please visit www.2010census.gov for a time line. This milestone is in our hands, please be counted in 2010.

Last week our town participated in the A1A Scenic Highway Tour. I want to thank Diane Boutin and John Olinzack for their dedicated efforts in making sure LBTS was represented for this tour. Commissioner Clottey and I were hostesses for the ride through the town and we both identified areas of interest together.

Hurricane season will officially start on June 1st, so please be prepared. I know our town staff, police and fire department will be available if you have any concerns.

On Monday we celebrated Memorial Day. My heartfelt thanks go out to all who have served our county. Without your sacrifices, we could not be living in the democracy we call the United States of America. Thank you to all the men, women and families who have given of themselves for the USA.

Thank you.

Message from Congressman Ron Klein -- Posted by Roseann on Saturday, May 16 2009

The following is a message received from Congressman Ron Klein:

On Friday, May 29, Congressman Ron Klein's staff will hold satellite office hours in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, from 2:00PM-3:00PM in Jarvis Hall.

To meet this goal, my staff will be holding regular satellite office hours in towns and cities across our Congressional District. Whether you would just like to say hello, share your thoughts on a topic of interest, or ask my staff for assistance, we are here for you, and I sincerely hope you will take advantage of the opportunity.

My office can be a resource for you. If you are having trouble obtaining veterans' benefits, Social Security payments, Medicare reimbursements or are dealing with other federal government issues, my experienced, professional caseworkers will be glad to assist you.

Mayor's Comments-Commission Mtg. 05/12/09 -- Posted by Roseann on Wednesday, May 13 2009

Good evening. On May 6th, this Commissioner was invited to the BSO annual awards ceremony. Two members of our community were honored, Mr. Mark Mitchell who received the Citizen of the Year Award for saving the life of a woman in the rip current in LBTS and Deputy John Melbourne of LBTS BSO. Deputy Melbourne was the first to arrive at the Hyperbaric Chamber and rescue the small child. These men personify the meaning of hometown heros. I also want to acknowledge our very own Chef Perkins, Commissioner Silverstone and Daniel Chavez with the VFD and AMR who were present to rescue the grandmother. They exemplify cooperation, teamwork and working hand-in-hand to save the lives of others. I know all of you would be modest and say you were just doing your job, but your actions are greatly appreciated and admired. Thank you.

Also, I want to thank the Property Owner's Association who put on a great program about recycling. Everyone present was informed and learned alot about our local recycling services. Also present that night was Sharon Huff of the Art and Frame Shop who profiled her Museum of Litter. Ms. Huff collects garbage from our local beaches and creates art.

I want to remind everyone of the workshop tomorrow evening on fire, heights and capital expenditures. Your input is what makes our community better. Please come to the meeting and let us all know your thoughts and concerns.

I also want to acknowledge two letters I received in my box at town hall. One was anonymous and the other from Mr. Marc Furth, who is a past commissioner. Mr. Furth, you as well as anyone know what it is to serve on this dais. Your misinterpretation is unfortunate. I was asking questions, and when I called Mr. Fisher it was only to ask if they knew anything about the fireworks in LBTS. Please Mr. Furth do not put words in my mouth. Your work and involvement in the 4th of July event is understood. I know with your effort and work, it will be a success. I am looking forward to helping as I did last year and serving.

As far as the anonymous letter is concerned, if you have something to say, please say it to me. Your actions are enormously cowardly and only validate your immaturity and childishness.

I want to wish all the town's mothers a belated Happy Mother's Day. I hope this past Sunday was a wonderful day for you, your family and friends.

The town was a buzz with the Aruba event and the opening of Lilacs to Lilies on Commercial, but I was sadden to read that Aruba is scaling back substantially the Memorial Day Event. I hope not due to the lack of town's support and the many obstacles that have been placed before them. At this time in our economy we should be promoting businesses not hindering them, but never at the expense of our residents.

Please remember that May 18th is the Spring Fling Concert, a free town event from 7-8 pm at the Comunity Church in LBTS.

I also want to thank Barbara Cole and her family for her generous offer for the pavilion.

Thank you.

Mayor's Comments-Commission Mtg. 04/14/09 -- Posted by Roseann on Thursday, April 16 2009

Good evening and thank you all for attending and listening at home.

The town was busy over the last few weeks from the ribbon cutting ceremony, the Easter sunrise service, to the Easter-By-The-Sea. Thank you volunteers, staff, businesses and residents who participated and enjoyed these town events.

I do want to remind everyone of the non-emergency numbers for BSO: 954-765-4321/Shift Commander 954-275-9939.

I would also like to clarify a statement that was written in the By the Sea Times March 6th issue. It states that "Mayor Minnet must stop this practice of opening the floor again and again to repetitive public comments once the public comment portion of the agenda is finished". This practice was voted on by the commission when we first set up our meetings last January. I confirmed this issue with the commission and the workshop and it was the consensus of this dais when we set up our meetings last year and was also reiterated at the last workshop that the commissioners want to hear from the public at public comments and during agenda items. As chair, I am working with my commissioners. This is the will of the majority of this commission, not just Mayor Minnet.

Also, I want to take this moment to thank all those who were instrumental in having the town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea mentioned in the New York Times, Sunday April 5th edition travel section. Anglins Pier and our very own Athena by the Sea and Laspada were highlighted. Thank you all who worked to have this publicity for our community.

I was highly disappointed by the last round table. I look forward to the next time when we can all be open and respectful to all.

Remember that April 25th is Florida Lighthouse Day, 2009.

Please keep May 13th in your calendars. This is an important date. We need to hear from you on the upcoming charter amendments. Please if you cannot attend, let us know your thoughts and concerns.

Thank you.

Mayor's Comments-Pavilion Ribbon Cutting 04/06/09 -- Posted by Roseann on Thursday, April 9 2009

Welcome and thank you for attending the ribbon cutting ceremony this evening for the Lauderdale-By-The-Sea pavilion.

This pavilion is a testimony to friendship, partnership and cooperation.

Friendship in the way we have all worked together to make this pavilion a reality. There was a willingness to work together. Previous commissions listened to the resident's thoughts and comments and made their vision a reality. Each person who has had a hand in this pavilion is a friend because of the common alliance of wanting to make Lauderdale-By-The-Sea a picturesque community.

Partnership with Broward County. Thank you Vice Mayor Keechel. Without partnership, this project would never have been a reality.

Cooperation - a project such as this does not happen unless there is cooperation. Thank you to our incredible master planning steering committee, led by Sandra Booth. Thank you to past and present commissioners and most importantly thank you to our town manager and staff. The cooperation for this project has been overwhelming and it is in responses to the wishes of the residents and the business community.

As we look upon this pavilion, let us remember those words:

Friendship, Partnership, Cooperation

All the tools to make a brighter future for the Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea.

Mayor's Comments-03/25/09 Commission Mtg. -- Posted by Roseann on Thursday, March 26 2009

I want to let everyone know that if you see or hear something in town that is suspicious, you can call 911 and report it. If it's not an emergency, the 911 operator will patch you through to the proper people. You do not have to give your name or telephone number to get a BSO response.

Also, Earth Hour is this Saturday, March 28th at 8:30-9:30 PM, EST. You can view the Earth Hour Music video at www.YouTube.com/Earthman. We are all encouraged to turn off our lights for just one hour.

Finally, the ribbon cutting ceremony for the new pavilion is Monday, April 6th at 7:00 pm. We hope to see all of you there!

Mayor's Comments-Commission Mtg. 03/10/09 -- Posted by Roseann on Sunday, March 15 2009

Thank you all for being here this evening and staying this late, at Jarvis Hall and the residents at home.

I had the pleasure of being in Tallahassee for opening day session and met with our state representatives. The legislature is working hard to get the state back on track. They know they have to come up with some out-of-the-box solutions.

As a small local community, I am proud to say that Lauderdale-By-The-Sea is thinking out of the box and saving the residents as much as government can in these difficult times. I thank you all for your patience and understanding. We must focus on the long term -- not the short term and work together, staying the course with common sense and accountability.

On a lighter note, I'd like to remind everyone of the Lauderdale-By-The-Sea Craft Fair this weekend and also the wonderful St. Patrick's Day events that will be happening this weekend. Please support our local businesses and think about using the Pelican Hopper to get to downtown. The parking is always a probelm and this way you won't need to worry about that. Let someone else do the driving.

The days are moving quickly and I want to remind everyone of the upcolming workshop on May 13th on three referendums. Your input is what makes government run more efficient, open and transparent, as this evening has shown.

I also want to thank the Caribe Women's Club for inviting me to speak to their group. They used the suggestion box in town hall - it's the first time it's been used - and I invite all to please send in your thoughts and concerns.

I also want to thank Dan Abbott for his contribution to our town. He has been a positive influence on this dais and I again want to give him my sincere thanks for everything he has done for our community. Thank you Dan and I will miss you, but I also look forward to the latest addition to our dais, so welcome Susan Trevarthen. I look forward to your guidance.

Lastly, regarding the comments by Commissioner Clottey on the size of the signs for Adopt-A-Street; these signs were presented when the Adopt-A-Street program was approved. Coral Springs does have a smaller size. This is a positive program for our community and I do look forward to your support on this project.

Thank you.

Personal Message from Roseann Minnet-January 13, 2009 -- Posted by Roseann on Monday, January 19 2009

As we embark on this New Year, let us all be kind in our thoughts and our actions. Let us start fresh and with a renewed sense of belief and trust.

Guide us to seek an open mind and heart to all that is presented here this evening.

Inspire us all to do our best and trust that others will do their best as well. Help us to bring out the best in others, not the worst.

Let us find balance in the words we speak tonight and even if people are unreasonable, irrational and self centered, forgive them.

Give us the strength to give this community all we have in the name of peace.

Green Living -- Posted by Roseann on Wednesday, June 4 2008

Did you know................

The United States comprises just 4% of the world's population, but uses 25% of its resources and 30% of its oil supply.

You can save more than $2500 per year by bringing your lunch to work rather than going out for lunch. Use reusable containers rather than paper or plastic and save even more money!

You can extend the life of your lettuce and other salad greens in your refrigerator by placing a stainless steel fork or spoon in with the greens.

People who live in the city are usually more friendly to the environment as they walk and bike more and use public transportation more. Also, the smaller homes and apartments are less expensive to run than a suburban home.

The average American creates 4.5 pounds of trash every day and will pop open 43,371 cans of soda in a lifetime.

You can "sell" your old kitchen. Green demolition organizations will help your renovation team by properly dismantling higher-end kitchen cabinets and appliances that can later be resold.

If you send any pair of old sneakers to Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe program, the company will turn them into bouncy playground flooring.

Good information for us all!!!
